Plans to modernise a waste transfer station at Campground, Wrekenton, have been approved by Sunderland City Councillors

SITA UK will demolish all the existing buildings on the site, many of which are derelict, and replace them with a new purpose-built facility and a new visitor and education centre.
The waste transfer station will deal with up to 90,000 tonnes of waste each year from Gateshead. It will be made up of non-recycled household waste. All of this material will be sorted at the station and then transferred onto lorries to be transported to SITA UK's energy-from-waste facility in Teesside where it will be used to generate electricity.
Once the redevelopment is complete all waste will be handled within the new building, rather than under the current temporary outdoor structure on the site.
Campground is one of three waste transfer stations being proposed by SITA UK as part of its contract with the South Tyne & Wear Waste Management Partnership. The other two facilities will be in Sunderland and South Tyneside. The partnership, which is Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland councils, is working to create better, more sustainable, ways of managing their residents' waste.
Commenting on the planning decision, Corrina Scott-Roy, planning manager for SITA UK, said: "The new-look waste transfer station will be a big improvement for local residents and the visitor and education centre, which will be powered by solar panels and a small wind turbine, will be a great resource for local schools.
"We will be setting up a community liaison group so that people can keep up to date with the redevelopment and ongoing operations at the site."
Chairman of the South Tyne & Wear Waste Management Partnership, Cllr Peter Mole, said: "This is great news for the local community. During consultation for the development we received a high level of support for improving the current waste transfer station - local people are keen to see the remains of the old incinerator replaced with a modern facility. The Visitor and Education Centre will be an asset to the community and school children of Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland."
