Leicestershire County Council leader, David Parsons, marked the beginning of operations at a mechanical biological waste treatment facility run by New Earth Solutions. Partnering with Lafarge Aggregates Limited, New Earth will treat up to 50,000 tonnes per annum of Leicestershire County Council's household waste that cannot be separated for recycling by residents. The facility is located at the Lafarge landfill site at Cotesbach, near Lutterworth, and includes an on-site air treatment plant to minimize odours. The plant's process creates a compost-like product that will be used for land restoration, including Lafarge's adjacent landfill site.
Mr. Parsons said: "Combined with our drive to reduce, recycle and compost more, this new contract will enable us to meet the challenging targets to reduce waste to landfill, and embrace pioneering technology."
Lafarge general manager, Andrew Bate, said: "We are proud to be partnering with Leicestershire County Council and New Earth Solutions in this innovative approach to managing waste that is not recycled at the kerbside."
