Northamptonshire And East Anglia Businesses Receive Recycling Aid

18 April 2011

Viridor is helping businesses in East Anglia and Northamptonshire to "go green" and save money with the launch of a regional recycling campaign

The company, which last year acquired leading local businesses Reconomy Recycling Solutions and Pearsons (Thetford) Ltd, has invested over £2.5m in an attempt to boost its recycling services in East Anglia and the South Midlands for collecting glass, paper, cardboard and other materials from a variety of businesses.

Stuart Wood, Viridor's regional manager, said: "As well as helping businesses become greener by increasing their recycling rates, they should also save money by reducing the amount of waste going to landfill, which is being taxed at steadily increasing rates until it reaches £80 per tonne by 2014.

"When we start working with a business we provide a free waste audit to make sure they have the right sized containers with suitable collection frequencies and hire periods to maximise their recycling rates thus reducing disposal costs."

Ongoing legislation changes mean there is an increasing pressure for businesses and homeowners alike to stop sending materials that can be recycled to landfill.

Viridor also suggests recycling more can help improve your businesses environmental credentials, which is becoming increasingly important in attracting new business.

Viridor's Top Ten Tips For Making The Most Of Your Business Recycling

1. Audit all your waste and establish what can be reduced and recycled

2. Assign a recycling champion to take responsibility of the recycling project

3. Post recycling rates on a wall to motivate staff to achieve more

4. Try to bin the bin and remove general waste containers as much as possible

5. Make sure recycling bins are clearly labelled so people know where to put different materials - Viridor recommends the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) colour coding system as it is easy to understand

6. Put recycling bins in a clean environment

7. Avoid printing emails if you don't have to

8. Lead by example

9. Reward positive examples of recycling initiatives

10. Print on both sides to reduce the amount of paper you use
