New Recycling Standard Following Carnival

18 October 2010

Following our report on the waste services at the 2009 Notting Hill Carnival ("Notting Hill Clean-UP" CIWM, October 2009), Powerday has reported that the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea set a new recycling standard for the event this year.

The cans, plastic, paper, cardboard and other waste generated by the one million revellers was collected by Sita and 224 tonnes was taken to Powerday's Materials Recycling Facility in Willesden Junction, less than three miles from where the Carnival took place. Forty percent was then recycled with the remainder recovered as a renewable fuel. This stands in comparison to the 165 tonnes of waste collected in 2009.
