Milton Keynes Council has awarded HW Martin Recycling Services a five-year, £4.5m contract, for the operation and management of its three Community Recycling Centres (CRCs).
The contract, beginning Wednesday 6 October, is part of the Councils effort to improve recycling rates by making previously landfilled waste available for recycling, re-use or recovery. It says the new operator has access to a number of markets for products, which were previously difficult to recycle, and forms part of the Milton Keynes "Zero Waste" approach.
A dedicated facility will now be set up to handle commercial waste, separate from residential waste; visitors will notice new site lay-outs aimed at improving the flow of traffic and reducing queuing at peak times; and HW Martin Recycling Services' vehicles are able to transport two containers of waste at a time, reducing the council's carbon footprint and saving on fuel costs.
Speaking on behalf of HW Martin Recycling Services, marketing manager James May, said: "We manage a number of household waste recycling centres on behalf of local authorities and we are delighted to add Milton Keynes to our portfolio.
"We aim to ensure the public enjoys their recycling experience - from our meet and greet staff, to operators giving a helping hand with bulky materials - the public are encouraged to return and continue to do their bit for the local environment.
We look forward to bringing the same high quality service and increased recycling rates that we already achieve in recycling centres up and down the country to Milton Keynes."
