A Shropshire-based environmental consultancy is celebrating a stream of recent successes, which include the opening of a second, dedicated mattress recycling centre, with a third soon to follow
JBS Fibre Recovery Ltd has enterprising plans to launch a range of mattress recycling plants across the country, based on the huge success and rapid growth of their original centre at Stafford Park, Telford, and their recently-opened plant in Milton Keynes.
The recycling specialists, who pride themselves on developing alternative waste technologies for the range of mattresses they recycle, and avoiding using landfill, are also celebrating striking figures for the number of mattresses that have already been recycled at their Telford plant.
Since opening just three months ago, over 14,000 mattresses have been recycled, diverting in excess of 600 tonnes from landfill.
The difficulty involved in recycling mattresses arises from the range of components used to make them, often resulting in a significant volume of landfill waste. Most general recycling centres are unable to process each of the separate components, which include metal, fabrics, and foam.
John Neill, Director of JBS Fibre Recovery Ltd, explained: "We are absolutely delighted with our recent round of successes. Thanks to our Telford centre, over 600 tonnes of waste have already been diverted from landfill in the last three months, an achievement that surpassed even our own high expectations. The massive growth of the Telford site highlighted the need for a much greater number of dedicated mattress recycling plants across the country, and urged us to bring forward our plans for new regional hubs UK-wide.
"The opening of the new centre in Milton Keynes last month is just the start of our plans, in fact we have a further centre opening in Bradford in October, with even more facilities coming online in future months."
"Despite the difficulties that are often involved in recycling mattresses, they are still being produced at a rapid rate - the National Bed Federation estimates that approximately two million mattresses are manufactured every year. It's our mission to divert over a million mattresses from landfill by 2012, and, based on our recent success and subsequent need for massive expansion, we are well on track to achieving this"' John concluded.
