A new £20 million Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Gillmoss, Liverpool, is all set to begin operations in August. The MRF, commissioned by Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority (MWDA) and run by Veolia Environmental Services, will come in addition to the facility in Bidston, the Wirral, and is part of several new projects being undertaken by MWDA.
The new facility's design involves state-of-the-art recycling separation technology to sort paper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, steel cans, aluminium cans and plastic bottles. The household dry recyclable waste collected from Knowsley and Liverpool will provide the waste feedstock and the volume will then be processed and baled and sent to third party processors.
The construction of the building adhered to stringent environment specifications and used recycled and reclaimed materials in its development. The facility has also been assessed using Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). Furthermore, a dedicated Visitor and Education Centre will also be part of the facility, which will be used to educate and inform schools and community groups.
Carl Beer, director, Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority, said: "Merseyside's waste management has come a long way in a relatively short space of time. We're really pleased with how the build is coming on and look forward to first operations towards the end of summer."
Speaking on the importance and need for a landmark facility like this, Alex Paterson, director, Veolia ES Merseyside & Halton, said: "The MRF represents a major recycling milestone in our contract with MWDA. This is another significant investment for both parties in striving to achieve our environmental targets and divert waste from landfill. The MRF will also provide an interactive, hands-on environment for all to learn about recycling and waste management."
MWDA's future course looks even more promising with plans to construct two brand new replacement Household Waste Recycling Centres with an ivestment of over £3 million.
