London Irish Rugby Club Shirt Amnesty Recycling Scheme Launched By Powerday

1 August 2011

The scheme will mean that the shirts collected will be given to those involved in sports programmes in disadvantaged countries, such as Africa and Eastern Europe

Powerday will work with LV= SOS Kit Aid, a charity that provide unwanted rugby kit to children of all abilities and backgrounds in disadvantaged countries. Over 300 tonnes of environmentally damaging CO2 emissions have been saved by recycling over 50,000 tonnes of sports kit to date by LV=SOS.

As well as the Shirt Amnesty recycling scheme having a positive social and environmental impact, London Irish supporters can benefit too. Supporters will receive a £10 discount voucher for donating their old shirt, which can be reclaimed when they purchase a new replica or pro fit shirt.

Mick Crossan, Chairman of Powerday, said: "We're really excited by this initiative, re-using perfectly wearable London Irish shirts enabling disadvantaged people around the world to play and enjoy rugby is a positive and worthwhile project. I hope all London Irish supporters support our efforts."

Co-chairman of LV= SOS Kit Aid, John Broadfoot, added: "LV= SOS Kit Aid is delighted to be involved with London Irish, Powerday in their new season shirt initiative. It goes without saying that Powerday is a major recycling business, so how appropriate that they are offering London Irish supporters a £10 discount voucher to recycle their old London Irish rugby shirts in a new season Shirt Amnesty. LV= SOS Kit Aid can then make them up into team sets and will send them to youngsters in disadvantaged countries to play the great game. Everyone wins - London Irish supporters get a discounted new shirt, disadvantaged youngsters will get their first rugby shirt and the environment will be helped too by recycling perfectly good rugby shirts."

From the 11 August, London Irish fans can donate a past London Irish replica or London Irish pro fit jersey at the megastore at the Madejski Stadium, Reading to receive their £10 discount voucher for a new Home, Away or European shirt.
