Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) announced two changes to its landfill tax rules recently
Fines from trommels and screens that were charged at the tax rate of £2.50 for inert material will now be charged the full rate of £64 a tonne for active material.
Also, waste or material used to cover waste in landfill cells before they are capped will also be taxed at the full rate.
The changes came on last Friday (18 May) in a Briefing set out by the HMRC to provide "further clarification on the Landfill Tax treatment of material used on a landfill site".
It was stated the impact of this Brief, and the extent that this policy is achieving its objectives, "will be kept under review," and will consider how best to evaluate the overall Landfill Tax policy "against its objective of encouraging the waste management industry and waste producers to seek more environmentally sustainable ways of dealing with waste."
The HMRC have denied rumours that the move is simply a way to collect more money.
