As of today (2 August) Keep Britain Tidy, the environmental charity and anti-litter campaign for England, and Waste Watch, campaigners for sustainable living, have joined forces
In an email from Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, which informed key industry figures of the move, he said: "The decision, taken by both trustee boards, follows a year-long strategic alliance and brings together two similar and like-minded charities with distinctive, but complementary agendas."
Both brands, Keep Britain Tidy and Waste Watch, will be retained in the merger, but Keep Britain Tidy will become the trading name.
The collaborated organisation will also keep the current Keep Britain Tidy office in Wigan and the Waste Watch office in London.
Waste Watch's practical, grassroots action to encourage people to live more sustainably and Keep Britain Tidy's experience in campaigning and local environmental quality will allow the merged organisation to grow and engage a wider audience, Barton also wrote in the email.
Waste Watch chair, Matthew Bennett, will become vice-chair of the new board working with Keep Britain Tidy chair, Mike Phillips.
"In the next few months, we will be undertaking a strategic review with a view to publishing our new business plan in April 2012," Barton stated. Concluding: "Finally, we would like to thank you for all your support to date and to say how much we look forward to working with you in the future on our shared mission to improve the local environmental quality and sustainability of our communities."
