Hackney Council To Optimise Fleet Operations Using Whitespace

19 April 2011

The London Borough of Hackney has chosen Whitespace Waste Software to deliver a telematics and communication system for the management, tracking and routing of its fleet

Through the move, the Council aims to achieve its goals of improving vehicle operations and service efficiencies across its adult social care and waste management departments.

The Council's previous review of fleet management methods highlighted improvements to be made to controls over the vehicles. The desired controls include the ability to gauge a vehicle's location, its work progress and understand how fleet vehicles are being driven.

Hackney Council's assistant director, public realm, Tom McCourt, said: "The Council aims to build on the service delivery improvements made within waste operations over recent years. Having this technology to track, monitor and communicate with our crews will assist us to bring about further improvements, enhance efficiency overall and provide an excellent service to our residents and commercial customers.

"We are pleased to have worked closely with Whitespace in the spirit of partnership to install the system whilst delivering frontline services uninterrupted. I am confident our continued work with them will help us to achieve our objectives."

Tracking and Location

Whitespace will employ TomTom WORK in-cab applications and integrate these with its web enabled operations management system, Power Suite. The council's waste services department will have over 80 TomTom installations and will include a requirement for additional signal pickups for specialist vehicles, including road sweepers and refuge collection vehicles. Adult social care's 14 coaches, eight meals on wheels vehicles and one van will have 22 TomTom installations.

As well as providing easy and clear navigation to fleet drivers, the TomTom applications will enable Councils' operations to receive instant service delivery messages, together with tracking and location information on their fleet. Council users will be able to access Power Suite either via PC's or PDAs.

Power Suite integrates with various other Council IT systems including Gazetteer, GIS and complaint management and produces exportable reports on all aspects of system information and data. This enables the Council teams to track, communicate with and re-route the vehicles and obtain vehicle status reports.

Whitespace will provide three-year support for its Power Suite software, TomTom hardware, and maintenance. Whitespace will also train the Council's technical and office staff in the administration and application of its web-based software.
