Garden Retailer Appoints DS Smith

22 February 2012

The national garden centre chain has appointed DS Smith Recycling to undertake all of its recycling and waste management to ultimately divert all its waste from landfill

As well as introducing recycling of mixed materials such as paper, cardboard and plastics, DS Smith Recycling is also helping Dobbies achieve closed loop recycling for its green waste. Consequently, all green waste produced in the maintenance of the garden centres will be turned into compost by one of Dobbies' approved suppliers, and used in products that Dobbies' sells to its customers.

DS Smith Recycling aims to identify the most cost-effective waste solutions for Dobbies. The company is currently running a trial to identify whether separating food waste produced in Dobbies' cafes for use in anaerobic digestion is commercially viable across the network of 32 centres.

Richard Jardine, sustainability manager for Dobbies, comments: "We are very keen to reduce our environmental impact. As a national chain of garden centres, we generate a wide range of materials and until now identifying a solution for each waste stream was difficult… We're excited to see that our goal of zero waste to landfill is achievable."

Tim Price, national commercial manager for DS Smith Recycling, adds: "Dobbies faced the problem many businesses see when they produce relatively small quantities of different types of waste. Identifying how best to handle such mixed waste can be challenging and costly. Our offer to businesses and retailers means that we take away this headache. By working with our own group's recycling operations and our partners we put in place an effective recycling system within our customers business and ensure that all material goes to more sustainable treatment options than landfill."
