Eastleigh Converts Waste In To Turf

17 March 2011

Eastleigh Council has announced a new initiative in collaboration with organics recycling firm Eco Sustainable Solutions to turn food waste in to turf for the borough's parks and sports grounds.

The move is seen to benefit football pitches, cricket greens, parks and open spaces across the borough by improving the quality of the grass and help tackle climate change.

Cabinet lead for the Environment, Louise Bloom, said: "Eastleigh residents are great recyclers and this exciting initiative will put something back into the community by providing the opportunity for food waste to be transformed into turf - something that is of real value to local people."

The process includes collecting food waste from households around the borough as part of the regular weekly collection, and transforming it into compost, which can be put back to use on the ground to grow turf. The end product is a hard wearing and drought tolerant turf, a sample of which has already been donated to the council. Work is already underway to lay this turf in parks and sports pitches around the borough to repair any bare patches.
