Total commercial and industrial (C&I) waste arisings in England, in 2009, are estimated to be 55.8m tonnes. The industrial sector accounts for 20.5m tonnes, or 37 percent, with the commercial sector accounting for 35.3m tonnes, or 63 percent. These are the results of Defra's interim estimates from the Departments Survey of Commercial and Industrial Waste Arisings 2010, covering eight English Regions (excluding North West England) for 2009 calendar year. Final results of the Survey of Commercial and Industrial Waste Arisings 2010 are planned to be released in December 2010.
Compared to the results of the last national survey of business waste in 2002/03, these interim results show that industrial waste has declined whilst commercial waste has increased, both in tonnage terms and as a proportion of total waste. The interim results also show a fall in total waste generation from the 2002/03 estimate of 67.9m tonnes.
Estimates for England are based on the combination of interim results from the Survey of Commercial and Industrial Waste Arisings for 2009 with data from the North West of England Commercial and Industrial Waste Survey for 2008/09 (hereafter referred to as the North West Survey) published in March 2010. It is intended as part of the final analysis of the Defra survey to re-analyse the North West survey raw data to generate 2009 estimates for the region in a way best comparable with the Defra survey methodology. This will allow the tabulation of England estimates broken down by sector, material type, waste management method and region in the final reporting.
