Cory Environmental And Wheelabrator Technologies As Preferred Bidder For Recycling Facility

29 October 2010

Norfolk County Council today announced that a consortium consisting of Cory Environmental Limited and Wheelabrator Technologies Inc will be recommended as preferred bidder to build and operate a state of the art power and recycling centre at Saddlebow near King’s Lynn.

Subject to approval by Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet, Cory Wheelabrator’s proposed facility would use Norfolk’s residual waste to generate over 20MW of electricity, enough for up to 36,000 homes, and could provide significant quantities of steam to nearby industrial users. It would process around 260,000 tonnes of waste each year and would recycle ash and metals on site. The waste would comprise 170,000 tonnes a year of Norfolk residents’ leftover rubbish, supplied by the county council, with the remaining capacity used to treat waste from local businesses.

A spokesman for the Cory Wheelabrator consortium said: "We are delighted to have reached this stage of the process. We are both committed to developing and delivering a modern, proven and safe facility which will help Norfolk deal with its leftover rubbish for many years to come as well as deliver a more sustainable system for waste disposal and better value for money for council taxpayers in Norfolk. We look forward to working with Norfolk County Council and communicating our proposals to the wider public prior to the submission of a planning application in the New Year."
