Clean Camden Campaign Highlights Millions In Avoidable Litter Costs

25 July 2011

Three and a half tonnes of litter was piled up in Lincoln's Inn Fields last week as Clean Camden Campaign highlights the cost of littering in Camden. Over seven tonnes of litter is cleaned up in Camden every day, at a cost of more than £9m a year

The event was part of the Clean Camden campaign, which encourages residents, businesses and visitors to bin or recycle their litter and help keep the borough clean.

Council officers explained and highlighted the cost and consequences of littering to residents and visitors.

Cllr Sue Vincent, Camden Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "We spend over £9m a year on street cleaning - money that could be spent on critical front line services under pressure.

"Our Clean Camden campaign is to encourage residents, businesses and visitors to bin or recycle their litter, to keep the borough clean and reduce the need for costly cleaning services. It is in everyone's interests to have a clean and attractive borough. By being thoughtful and responsible in how we dispose of our litter we can achieve this.

"We will do our bit and ensure we have enough bins. We are asking residents, businesses and visitors to 'Bin it, don't throw money away'. To encourage a change in behaviour we started with a promotional campaign but we will also have enforcement action to get the message across. It's time for everyone to deal with their litter responsibly, and this campaign will help to get everybody doing just that."

Russell Griffiths, Veolia Environmental Services' Camden Senior Contract Manager said: "Keeping Camden looking spick and span is a role that we can all play. We are pleased to be working with Camden Council to help reduce litter in the area and provide services that encourage residents and businesses to take pride in their local community."
