City Of York Council Sets Recycling Sights Higher For Recycle Week

City of York Council is encouraging residents to remember to recycle wherever they are, whether at home or away, as part of National Recycle Week (20-26 June)

Elizabeth Parker, the council's Waste Strategy officer, explained: "York residents are already brilliant at recycling. Their efforts have meant that as a city we're now recycling over 45 percent of our total household waste.

"But there's always more we can do. It's relatively easy to recycle at home, but much harder to make the effort when you're out and about. It's so important that we all do as much as we can to avoid waste and increase recycling levels. By doing so we help the environment and reduce the costs of disposing of household waste in landfill."

Youngsters at a school in York are already doing their bit to help increase recycling. Councillor James Alexander, Labour Leader of City of York Council, will meet pupils from St Barnabas School on Monday to see how their efforts to recycle more and waste less are going.

All York schools can now recycle a wide range of other materials through the waste collection Service Level Agreement between each school and the council, including recycling batteries, ink cartridges, mobile phones, books, textiles, shoes, cooking oil and electrical and electronic equipment.
