BRIEF NEWS: Captain Planet Is To Be Recycled

21 July 2011

Captain Planet, the iconic 90s cartoon eco-superhero is soon to return to our screens in a live action movie

Cartoon Network's Captain Planet first aired in 1990 with the catchy theme tune: "Captain Planet, he's a hero. Gonna take pollution down to zero".

The eco-warrior was supported by a team of five "Planeteers", who each sported rings representing Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Heart, which allowed them to control that particular element in the fight against pollution.

Big name producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford, fresh from overseeing Transformers: Dark side of the Moon, are reportedly on board for a "spectacular series of films".

Of course, the climate and pollution debate has moved on since the early 1990s, so we're left wondering if Captain Planet will address not just pollution, but a range of issues that surround today's fight to "save" the planet.

"With the earthquakes, tornadoes, melting icebergs and all the other problems threatening the world right now, Earth really needs her greatest defender," said Montford.

The original series saw guest voice appearances including: Meg Ryan, Martin Sheen and Sting, with Whoopi Goldberg playing Gaia, the spirit of the Earth. We wonder whether an array of eco-aware stars will line up for the new venture?
