Asda Renews Norbert Dentressangle Contract For A Further Five Years

Asda has renewed its contract with Norbert Dentressangle for the management of eight Asda Service Centres (ASCs) - the hub of Asda's recycling operations - for a further five years

Norbert Dentressangle has worked in partnership with Asda for more than a decade, in which time the retailer has significantly increased the amount of waste it diverts from landfill.

Norbert Dentressangle has also worked closely with Asda to implement best practices in the management and handling of returned product, including electrical goods, music, video, games and books and currently handles in the region of 13m units each year.

Asda's Distribution Director, Ian Stansfield said: "This new five year agreement with Norbert Dentressangle demonstrates our continued ambition to be environmentally sustainable across Distribution and the wider business."

Asda's regional Service Centre network handles returnable transit packaging, card, plastic, food waste and returned goods from over 400 Asda stores throughout the UK. Returnable transit packaging and waste is collected by Asda's vehicles and delivered to the ASCs on the return leg. Returnable items are then processed for collection and re-used by Asda and its suppliers.

Originally appointed to manage the network in 2002, Norbert Dentressangle is responsible for all activities within the centres, including equipment washing, packaging waste baling and equipment sortation.

Employing around 650 people, the Norbert Dentressangle operation currently handles in excess of 126m trays and recycles more than 170,000 tonnes of card and plastic and 30,000 tonnes of food waste each year. Following Asda's recent integration of 147 Netto stores, it is anticipated that volumes through the ASC network will increase by around 5-10 percent.
