Aldi Appoints DS Smith To Boost Recycling Rates

1 November 2011

Leading discount retailer, Aldi, has appointed DS Smith Recycling (formerly Severnside Recycling) as its waste management partner to boost recycling rates even further across the retailer's 468 stores and 7 distribution centres

DS Smith Recycling will apply its sustainable, no landfill ethos to Aldi's waste to further improve the company's current performance.

Aldi said it is dedicated to improving its environmental impact through reducing its carbon footprint, reducing waste, re-using and recycling more.

DS Smith Recycling is an expert in handling waste from the retail sector, advising on new processes to maximise recycling and reduce waste and identify more sustainable disposal solutions as alternatives to landfill.

"Aldi is a great example of a retailer dedicated to reducing its environmental impact and is making significant progress in making a difference," says Carwyn Gurmin, commercial manager at DS Smith Recycling. "We are best placed to help Aldi deliver on its recycling commitments, having delivered similar solutions for some of the UK's largest retailers and our network of recyclers means that nearly all the waste produced by Aldi can be reprocessed into new products."

An Aldi spokesman added: "We're committed to making landfill a last resort for our waste. In choosing DS Smith Recycling we are able to combine expertise of the retail sector with knowledge of sustainable waste management. Together, we will be identifying new processes to enable us to reduce waste and recycle more, as well as achieve even greater reductions to our carbon footprint."
