Teaser TextIrina Arakelyan was the recipient of CIWM’s James Sumner Award for 2009, and she used the £1 000 bursary to attend the ISWA/DAKOFA Waste & Climate Conference in Copenhagen The International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) prepared a series of initiatives to enable it to participate in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 15) held in Copenhagen last December. ISWA’s goal was to show how intelligent solid waste management can play an important role in efforts to reduce climate change. By participating in the UN conference, ISWA hoped to help put the solid waste management sector on the international climate agenda as an equal partner with other sectors and to demonstrate how solid waste management can be part of the solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
