Teaser TextAlan Metcalfe plots the current, and proposed, incineration sites in the UK, concluding that capacity could double, treble or even quadruple in the next few years T he management of waste, and of municipal waste in particular, has transformed dramatically over the decade since the Landfill Directive came into effect. Central to that transformation has been the building of new infrastructure. This issue has been examined as part of research on the ESRC-funded The Waste of the World programme. In the first few years after 1999 the energy of both local and central government centred on increasing recycling, but recently there has been an additional and increasing focus on larger-scale treatment and disposal technologies to deal with residual, black bag waste. Various technologies, such as combined heat and power (CHP) and energy from waste (EfW) incinerators, mechanical biological treatment facilities (MBTs) and newer technologies, such as autoclaves and gasification plants, have been presented as solutions.
