Teaser TextThe financial driver for the increased collection and treatment of food waste will be legislation. Owain cited the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) targets which state that by 2012/13 all local authorities must divert at least 12 percent of their total municipal waste arisings through food waste collections. Failure to achieve this could result in fines. “This will be a big challenge,” said Owain, adding that the EU Landfill Directive is another big driver of the separate collection and processing of food waste. The task is large: Owain stated that recent composition analysis undertaken by the WAG indicates that about 20 percent of the 1.725m tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) produced in Wales during 2008/09 was food waste. To meet WAG targets, at least 200 000 tonnes of it will need to be collected annually.
