Training courses of up to one week in duration can apply for CIWM Accreditation in order for their courses to contribute towards CPD and SLD.
Procedure
Accreditation of training courses is conducted via a desk based exercise based on the information submitted in the application form (if more information is required, it will be requested). Technical experts will be consulted where necessary, and, provided the course meets the required standard, it will be accredited for a set period of time (dependent upon material and topic) up to a maximum of three years.
Each year a selected number of accredited courses will receive a Quality Assurance visit from a member of CIWM. The course provider will be expected to provide an 'observer' place on the course free of charge. This Quality Assurance visit will ensure that the material delivered is in line with the information provided on the initial application, and that updates have occurred where necessary. The tutors and deliverers will also be assessed to ensure that they have the knowledge and training skills required to deliver the course. A copy of the assessment form will be available before the visit if requested.
Once the accreditation period has expired, or if substantial changes are being made, courses are able to apply for re-accreditation. This will involve completion of the application form (see link on the right), detailing the changes that have occurred (i.e. structure, format, deliverers, major course content changes, etc.). It is expected that minor updates will occur each time a course is run, and these therefore do not warrant a re-accreditation application.
Cost
For each formal accreditation of training courses the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management charges £350+VAT per course. Each accredited course will incur this charge, regardless of when they will receive a QA visit. Reaccreditations will usually be charged at £350+VAT per course/module, but a reduced fee may be negotiated if applying within one month of the accreditation expiry date.
Accredited training courses will be provided with a dated 'CIWM Accredited Course' logo and form of words that they will be able to use on any material related to the course. The CIWM website will list Accredited Short Courses on a webpage accessible by all CIWM members, and provide a link to the course website. When requests for information on training courses are received by members of the CIWM Education and Training Department, those courses that have been accredited will be made known to the inquirer, and their accredited status highlighted.
