Right Waste, Right Place Project launch

A campaign to raise business awareness of Duty of Care and the financial and environmental cost of waste crime launches today.

The Right Waste, Right Place campaign which is supported by CIWM and a coalition of public bodies is primarily aimed at SMEs and will raise awareness of the Duty of Care legislation and provide practical information to help companies, partnerships, family businesses and sole traders from a broad range of sectors to comply and help keep waste out of the hands of waste criminals.

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) is delighted to be an active supporter and co-funder of this important project.

Steve Lee, CEO of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management said.  “The waste ‘Duty of Care’ is a fundamental tool in responsible waste management and prevention of waste crime.  Despite its presence at the heart of this industry for more than a quarter of a century, it is still poorly understood and poorly used by many businesses and this project aims to fill an information and advice gap complementary to the new Duty of Care Code of Practice, released by Defra last month.  Armed with simple advice CIWM believes businesses of all sizes and kinds can work better with their waste managers to control their costs, protect people and the environment and avoid prosecution for failure to control wastes.

CIWM will be supporting this vital project through all of its services and communications reach and has co-funded its second phase to keep the message live.”

An interactive website has been developed as a part of the campaign, www.rightwasterightplace.com and is designed to be easy to use, convenient and pragmatic.

Not only will the site contain essential information to help establishments and businesses comply, but it will also act as a simple portal to a wide range of other information and services for those with more sector specific enquiries.

The campaign will use a wide range of initiatives to help increase awareness, many of which will utilise social media to reflect the way a lot of smaller businesses now source information and become involved.
