CIWM welcomes AD Strategy and Action Plan

Yesterday (Wednesday 22nd June), Defra and DECC launched the Anaerobic Digestion Strategy and Action plan - announced at the CIWM Conference last week by the Secretary of State for the Environment Caroline Spelman.

Hosted by waste minister Lord Henley, the event brought together representatives of the organisations who have contributed to the AD Strategy for the launch. CIWM, represented by Trustee and Biological Treatment Special Interest Group (SIG) Chairman Stuart Reynolds and Tina Benfield from the Technical Team, has been closely involved with this work. The SIG will now meet on 18th July to consider the Strategy in detail and to make firm plans for CIWM input into the actions including skills needs analysis and training / standards in this growth sector.

Stuart Reynolds says: "This has been a good process culminating in a well presented and informative document. The Strategy belongs to Defra and DECC but it secures contributions from a broad range of stakeholder organisations, including CIWM. The acid test will be to see if those actions are delivered as promised and whether new work is identified along the way to overcome barriers to faster take-up of AD for wastes. I would also like to thank everyone in CIWM who has contributed thus far... and to thank them in anticipation of further work done to deliver on our actions!"

Steve Lee, CIWM Chief Executive welcomes the document: "The AD Strategy is a very different animal to the Waste Policy Review. It is action-based, timed, and secures input from knowledgeable organisations already engaged in AD development. Assuming it is successful, this approach would be a good blue-print for action elsewhere in sustainable resource and waste management: engaging stakeholders in solutions not just identification of problems. In addition, while it might appear to be a plan for England, many of the 'fixes' will be equally applicable right through the UK and even beyond."

A copy of the AD Strategy and Action Plan can be found on the Defra website: http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/waste/business/anaerobic-digestion/

Further comment via the CIWM SIG will be posted on this website and on the Members' News Online service.
