"Following our latest reader survey, we decided to give the Journal not only a refreshed design, but new features in line with what our members and subscribers said they wanted," explains the Journal's editor Ben Wood.
The new approach will take the form of a monthly series of one-page opinion pieces and comment from industry experts, designed to stimulate debate on topical issues both in the Journal and online through the Journal's LinkedIn group.
"With more contributors writing shorter articles, we aim to bring readers some really interesting, opinionated and hard-hitting features. What we want is for anyone with an opinion to put their hand up and say 'this is what I think'… and for anyone who disagrees to say so!" adds Ben.
"The recent reader survey showed a high level of satisfaction with the Journal's content, but that extra little bit of debate and discussion will give it an extra bit of 'bite'. We're kicking off with three exciting topics, the Localism Act, the critical question of skills and recruitment in waste and resources, and the future of healthcare waste management… and I'm expecting there to be some forthright views!"
As for the redesign elements, while there's nothing too radical planned, the changes have been designed to give readers more information on every page. There will be summaries of the longer and more technical features, and technical jargon buster boxes and easy access to key information across all the features.
"The idea is that if you open the Journal at any page, there will be something that will be of interest, even if the article itself isn't directly relevant to you. We have a wide cross section of members who have very different levels of knowledge and areas of interest and this should help to make every article more interesting and accessible for everyone," says Ben.
The new-look CIWM Journal will be available in early January 2012. If you want to get involved and have an opinion you'd like to share, email the editor at ben.wood@ciwm.co.uk
