CIWM member named in New Year's Honours List

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) extends its warmest congratulations to professionals involved in waste and resource management sector who have been named in the New Year's Honours List.

CIWM Member Professor Judith Irene Petts has been awarded a CBE for services to scientific research. Judith is Professor of Environmental Risk Management and Dean of Social and Human Sciences at the University of Southampton and has over 30 years experience in applied research and advisory work in waste management, with a particular focus on public engagement and decision-making. She has been a specialist advisor to House of Commons and House of Lords Committees, worked on projects for Defra and its predecessor bodies and the Environment Agency and also over some 12 years ran postgraduate waste training. Judith was a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution for 6 years and is a member of Veolia Environmental's Advisory Board.

Others to be honoured included Joan Ruddock (DBE), previously Minister of State at DECC and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at Defra, Diana Linskey (OBE), former Deputy Director at Defra who headed up the recent Waste Policy Review, and Professor Robert Tony Watson CMG, Chief Scientific Advisor for Defra, who received a knighthood.
