CIWM has welcomed the publication of the Annual European Union greenhouse gas inventory 1990-2010 and inventory report 2012
This report is the annual submission of the greenhouse gas inventory of the European Union to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol. It presents greenhouse gas emissions between 1990 and 2010 for EU-27, EU-15, individual Member States and economic sector.
This report shows:
Across the EU there is a move away from landfill and a decrease in the corresponding greenhouse gases.
There are strong greenhouse gas reductions across the EU from 1990-2010, especially the EU15.
The UK and Germany are the two biggest emitters of greenhouse gases.
The UK is the 5th best at reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions.
"It is good to know we are making a difference and reducing our reliance on landfill. However, as this trend continues and our industry focuses increasingly on resource management, it will become harder to measure performance improvement and to gauge the contribution that our industry is making to GHG reduction. New measures will need to be developed to allow us to accurately monitor progress in the future."
