Thermal Treatment SIG

Aim

The purpose of this Special Interest Group is to act as a forum for information exchange relating to the thermal treatment of wastes within the UK.

Objectives

To achieve its aim the Special Interest Group will:

• Investigate and report on new techniques or technologies for thermal treatment or other processes involving thermal treatments.
• Promote debate and discussion on topical specialised issues relating to thermal treatment.
• Keep up-to-date with emerging legislation relating to thermal treatment in the UK and its devolved administrations, across Europe and internationally
• Share information on environmental matters, economic and sociological matters concerning thermal treatment currently in practice.
• Respond where necessary to consultation documents issued by Government and devolved Governments, the EU and other International bodies, relating to thermal treatment of wastes.
• Liaise with Government departments and other organisations working within the thermal treatment sector.
• Co-operate with other CIWM technical and strategic groups, especially the Biological Treatment SIG (which cover Anaerobic Digestion) and the Waste Strategy SIG, and those within the wider industry with regard to information dissemination to avoid duplication of efforts.
• Act as a resource of technical expertise to the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management on the subject of thermal treatment of wastes in relation to policy, legislation, guidance and training requirements for waste management professionals.
• Organise events, member briefings, or newsletters to disseminate relevant information on thermal treatment of wastes as widely as possible among CIWM members and other interested parties.

Steering Committee

The work of the Special Interest Group is co-ordinated by a steering committee that reports to the CIWM Scientific & Technical Committee.

Membership

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in thermal treatment and related sectors including students and those with "grass roots" practical experience.  CIWM membership is not a pre-requisite, although we hope that this will be a natural progression for those interested in keeping up-to-date with information and progression of their career.
