The SIG shall concentrate on the top of the hierarchy, which is from re-use upwards (excluding recycling) and to include all origins of waste. It will identify opportunities and gaps within the sector in order to influence and support national programmes and initiatives.
To achieve its aim the Special Interest Group will:
• Provide an active forum for information exchange for all those parties interested in waste prevention, tying in sustainable consumption and production.
• Map the expertise of the SIG members to understand gaps in the group's knowledge base and recruit accordingly.
• To influence government on specific issues such as; assisting with the production of a waste prevention programme as per Article 29 of the Waste Framework Directive (2008/9); and reviews of the UK national strategies.
• To engage with stakeholders across all sectors as effectively as possible and actively work in close partnership with government and third party organisations involved in SCP and prevention.
• To disseminate knowledge and understanding on best practice pertaining to prevention of waste.
• Liaise with Government departments and other organisations working within the waste prevention sector.
• Promote waste prevention activities through the CIWM web, seminars, magazine articles, news online and any other suitable media.
• Responding as necessary to relevant consultation papers on behalf of the institution.
The work of the Special Interest Group is coordinated by a steering committee that reports to the CIWM Scientific & Technical Committee.
Membership is open to anyone with an interest in waste prevention, SCP and related sectors. This may include students and those with "grass roots" practical experience. CIWM membership is not a pre-requisite, although we hope that this will be a natural progression for those interested in keeping up-to-date with information and the progression of their career.
