As businesses become more aware of their impact on the environment many are adopting a number of initiatives to improve their environmental sustainability. Reducing resource use and recycling waste are often important components of any environmental improvement campaign and have the added advantage of cost savings!
For the purposes of this award recycling shall also include re-use i.e. the process of re-using a product beyond its intended use and for the purpose for which it was originally intended. Recycling is the process of remanufacturing old (waste) materials into a different and useable product.
The application will recognise excellent performance in re-use and recycling across all industries and sectors and shall be measured against the following criteria:
Demonstrate how a material previously designated a waste either directly by the manufacturer or further down the chain of utility has been re-used.
Show that either; large quantities of waste material have been recycled in an innovative way new to the industry, or previously un recyclable, difficult or contaminated material have been recycled, or how small quantities of valuable material have been recovered.
Provide details of cost and scale, i.e. the value of the recycling in terms of saved disposal costs, energy value, saved material or environmental costs.
Identify how the scheme was developed including research, impact on the business and the industry and the environment.
